Das Schweigen der Lämmer (1991)

6/10

A psychopathic man in drag dances naked in front of a mirror with his genitals tucked between his legs and you can see his pubic hair.

A decomposing, nude female body is briefly seen on an autopsy table. Sensitive nudity isn't very noticeable.

A brief shot of the 'Woman Suit' that Buffalo Bill is creating from dead bodies this has one breast visible for a short time. The camera never focuses on the suit itself.

Polaroids of topless woman are briefly seen in Buffalo Bill's house.

Some moderate sexual references.

An inmate is seen masturbating, and later he is shown to throw his semen at the face of a woman who is visiting Hannibal Lecter.

Reference to the killer believing himself to be transexual and being rejected from a sex change program.

Lecter asks a woman about her breast feeding her daughter and then makes a crude comment about her nipples.

The violence is usually brief and cuts away before anything graphic occurs.

When Hannibal escapes from prison, he bites off part of a man's cheek (it's somewhat implied he takes out the tongue as well). He then bashes the man's head against the cell and sprays chemical mace in his eyes. He then beats the other on the head with a night stick offscreen until he dies. Blood is still seen spurting and the body is shown in a pool of blood.

The dead body of a prison guard is shown hung from a prison cell in a mimicry of the crucifixion scene. The guard's stomach is cut open, and we see the body from a distance.

Clarice shoots a man six times in the chest, he spits up blood and gurgles as we briefly see the bloody bullet wounds.

During Hannibal's escape, he wears the face of a dead guard as a disguise. We see him peel the man's bloody face off. His own face is completely covered in blood.

We see gruesome crime photos of the skinned bodies of women. An autopsy scene shows the dead, nude, and decomposing body of a woman.

A man's decapitated head is found in a jar. Sudden.

An old woman's petrified body is seen briefly in a bathtub.

A woman is kidnapped by a psychopath and kept in a pit in his basement. No violence befalls her, but he plans on starving and skinning her, as he has with his other victims.

Brief allusions to cannibalistic acts.

9/10

The premise of a killer skinning his victims is, by itself, disturbing, although the shock factor is greatly lessened by the fact that he does it on corpses rather than living people.

An intense sequence when a killer uses ruthless means to escape.

It can be disturbing to hear the violent acts that a character has supposedly inflicted.

Hannibal sometimes talks about sex in a creepy way.

The overall movie has a grimy atmosphere.

Less disturbing than Hannibal and Hannibal Rising.

If you can cope with the elements of Red Dragon you should be fine with this

Suggested MPAA Rating: R for strong violence including grisly images, some sexual content, nudity, and language.
